Laboratory and genomics scientists are one of the largest groups in the healthcare science family and play a core role in helping patients get the right care. People working in these areas use science to look closely at samples like blood and tissue, genes and DNA to understand what is causing illness. The results they produce help doctors and other healthcare professionals diagnose conditions, choose treatments and plan care across NHS Wales.
Most laboratory science and genomics professionals work in laboratories or in specialist departments away from the clinic, but there are some that work with patients directly at very different stages of their life course, such as embryologists (looking after embryos), genetic counsellors (running clinics with patients with genetic conditions) and anatomical pathology technologists (working in mortuaries).
Laboratory and genomics roles share a strong scientific foundation, but day‑to‑day work can vary depending on the specialty. You may be well suited to a career in this area if you:
Enjoy science and understanding disease at a detailed level
Like problem‑solving and working with data and evidence
Feel comfortable using specialist laboratory equipment and technology
Have strong attention to detail and value accuracy
Like working as part of a wider clinical or scientific team
Want to make a difference to patient care, either behind the scenes or directly with patients
