NHS Wales statement: Student streamlining 2026

Published: 11/05/2026

NHS Wales is currently managing a gap between the number of newly qualified graduates and the number of immediately available Band 5 roles through the Streamlining process.

This reflects financial pressures, improved retention, and changes in workforce patterns. We recognise this is a difficult position for graduates.

Health Boards have currently identified 809 roles, representing around 69% of the anticipated graduate cohort at this stage. These roles are being added to the Streamlining portal and reflect the current position at this stage of the Streamlining process. The position will continue to evolve throughout the process as organisations continue to work to identify suitable roles and opportunities.

Organisations across NHS Wales are working together to maximise opportunities and support students through a nationally coordinated, fair, and transparent process.

Students will be supported through phased matching and encouraged to consider wider opportunities across health and care settings.

Work is also ongoing across NHS Wales to support longer-term workforce planning and sustainability.

Students are encouraged to refer to the latest FAQs, available via the NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership Student Streamlining Scheme webpage
