Supporting pharmacist credentialing in Wales

Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) is committed to supporting pharmacist credentialing as a key mechanism for assuring high‑quality, person‑centred care across Wales.

What is Credentialing?

Credentialing provides a nationally recognised and consistent approach for pharmacists working towards Enhanced, Advanced and Consultant levels to demonstrate their capability against professional standards.

Through a rigorous, peer‑reviewed process, credentialing offers assurance to the public, employers and the wider healthcare system that practice has been evidenced and assessed against agreed professional expectations.

How it works

Using recognised curricula and assessment tools, pharmacists reflect on their practice, identify their current level of working and plan their ongoing professional development. Over time, credentialing supports pharmacists to develop their expertise and evidence their practice with confidence and professionalism.

The benefits
  • Employers can place greater confidence in deploying pharmacists into roles that fully utilise their skills and experience.
  • Patients and the public gain assurance that care is delivered by pharmacists whose practice has been robustly assessed and peer reviewed.
  • Multidisciplinary teams benefit from a shared understanding of enhanced, advanced and consultant‑level pharmacy roles, supporting safe, confident and collaborative working in increasingly complex care settings.'
