The all Wales integrated care General Practitioner (GP) fellowship allows GPs to work in a stimulating clinical role, with protected time for mentoring and study leave, towards a higher qualification. Skills in the chosen primary care clinical or non-clinical specialty are developed with specialist support and help build a portfolio career. The fellowship provides a supportive practice and GP mentorship while using enhanced skills outside their General Medical Services (GMS) role.
The programme for new and mid-career GPs, lasts 12 months and builds on early programmes in Hywel Dda and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Boards.
GPs, GP practices and health boards will all benefit from this scheme. Here’s how:
Fellowships are being developed across primary and secondary care, placing fellows in both community and hospital settings. All seven health boards are supporting this scheme and working with HEIW to develop roles that will attract GPs to work in our rural and deprived areas as well as urban centres.
Each fellowship is developed around the requirements of the health board, the qualification applied for, the practice and the fellow. A typical working week would involve a four-day commitment, for example:
|Morning||GP session||Specialist clinic||Peer learning||GP session||Free|
|Afternoon||GP session||Specialist clinic||Educational session||GP session||Free|
Each fellowship supports the needs of local populations and makes best use of the skills you bring as a GP. Posts will be advertised for specific specialties that are practiced in the community, for example, sexual health, prison medicine, health inclusion, and dermatology. Each fellow applies for a specific programme within a set specialist area.
Registered GPs and GPST expected to completed training before 31/08/2023 can sign up to NHS jobs to ensure you hear about fellowships in your area.
You can also contact the training team in your health board for more information or reach out to our Primary Care Team at HEIW via HEIW.Primarycare@wales.nhs.uk.
