Framework Area 4: Enhancing learning through assessment

An important element of the trainer role involves assessment of a resident doctor’s progress. Assessment can take many forms including workplace based assessments, case based discussions and formal examinations.

To facilitate learning from the assessment process, trainers should provide clear and constructive feedback to help the resident doctor to identify areas of strength and areas that require further development. The feedback process should also encourage resident doctors to reflect on their own performance.
