GMC National Trainer Survey

The General Medical Council (GMC) survey is open 24 March – 6 May 2026.

The GMC survey is an opportunity for trainers to provide feedback on workload, time and developmental needs. In addition, the completion reference number can be used as evidence of participating in systems of quality assurance and quality improvement at appraisal.

This is a valuable opportunity to influence training and resources by sharing your views with the GMC on the standards of medical education and training in Wales. Please be assured that all responses are confidential and reported anonymously.

Watch this video from Dr Malcolm Gajraj, Director of Quality Management, Medical Deanery HEIW to learn more.

How will Trainers be contacted?

The GMC will email you an invitation to complete the survey. You can fill it in by logging into your GMC Online account.

If you haven’t used GMC Online before, you can activate your account by answering a few quick questions when you first log in.

You can activate your account via GMC managing your registration.

Who is asked to complete the survey?

The survey is relevant to the following groups:

  1. Educational supervisors
In secondary care this refers to those who have signed up to the Educational Supervision Agreement and have been or are currently actively supervising resident doctors in the last year. In primary care this refers to GP Trainers who have current trainees.

Please contact HEIW if you are a trainer who has not been actively supervising in the last year. When we hear from you, we will exclude you from the survey and the email reminders will be stopped. This will also help us understand how representative our response rate is.

  1. Named clinical supervisors
Clinical supervisors who oversee a trainees’ work throughout the post and are involved in progress decisions and who have current trainees.

When will the results be available?

The GMC has advised that the results will be publicly available in summer 2026 (final date to be confirmed). HEIW will circulate further information regarding the results as it becomes available.

What do we do with the results?

HEIW will review all of the results in the light of existing information around learning environments across Wales. This may trigger the need for a further review by the Faculty Team or we may undertake a targeted visit in order to support improvements. We also compare results with previous years to help us understand trends. We look at trainer and trainee feedback together to find common themes, which we share with executive teams. Trainer survey results also help shape our quality visits, and trainers are invited to take part as standard. Faculty teams review any concerns raised in the trainer survey.

Contact the HEIW Quality Team for more detailed information on how we manage medical education and training. Full details about this year’s survey and results of past surveys can be found on the GMC’s website.
