GMC National Trainee Survey

The General Medical Council (GMC) survey is open 24 March – 6 May 2026.

All resident doctors are required to complete the survey to provide feedback on their current placement.

By sharing your views with the GMC on the standards of medical education and training in Wales, you help shape and improve the quality of future training. Please be assured that all responses are confidential and reported anonymously.

Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) is very grateful for this feedback, which is invaluable in helping us monitor and improve the quality of medical education and training in Wales. To do this effectively, it is essential that we receive representative response rates.

Watch this video from Dr Malcolm Gajraj, Director of Quality Management, Medical Deanery HEIW to learn more.

How will resident doctors be contacted?

Resident doctors will need to log in to their GMC Online account.

The Trainee Survey can be accessed by clicking on the ‘My Surveys’ tab. The first page of the survey form will be pre-populated with the resident doctor’s post details and resident doctors need to confirm if they are correct or amend if necessary.

In the unlikely event that the details are incorrect, HEIW needs to validate the change before the resident can continue to complete the survey.

Which resident doctors are required to complete the survey?

The survey is relevant to:

  • Foundation trainees
  • Core trainees
  • Higher specialty trainees, including SpR and GP trainees
  • Fixed term specialty training appointment (FTSTA) trainees
  • Locum appointment for training (LAT) trainees
  • Military trainees
  • Trainees in clinical lecturer and academic clinical fellowship posts approved by the GMC
  • Trainees working for non-NHS organisations
  • Trainees on a programme being hosted on behalf of another Deanery
  • Post CCT trainees on sub-specialty training
  • F2 trainees completing additional GP training.

Trainees who are not surveyed include those on maternity or paternity leave on the census date, Out of programme trainees: Out of Programme Training (OOPT) outside of the UK or not in a GMC approved programme, out of programme research (OOPR), out of programme pause (OOPP) NHSE trainees only, out of programme experience (OOPE), or out of programme career break (OOPC) on the census date.

If you have received an invitation but feel you are ineligible to take the survey please contact the HEIW Team.

When will the results be available?

The GMC has advised that the results will be publicly available in summer 2026 (final date TBC). HEIW will circulate further information regarding the results as it becomes available.

What do we do with the results?

HEIW will review all of the results in the light of existing information around learning environments across Wales. This may trigger the need for a further review by the Faculty team or we may undertake a Targeted visit in order to support improvements.

Contact the HEIW Quality Team for more detailed information on how we manage medical education and training. Full details about this year’s survey and results of past surveys can be found on the GMC’s website.
