Our deanery

Joining one of around 80 O&G trainees in Wales means more than excellent supervision and a high consultant-to-trainee ratio, it means becoming part of a close knit, supportive community. Our trainees collaborate, innovate, and grow together, creating an environment that nurtures both professional development and lasting friendships.

Locations

Wales offers a rich mix of urban and rural hospital settings, giving trainees broad clinical exposure and a diverse patient base. You will rotate through both district general hospitals and tertiary centres, gaining experience across the full spectrum of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

ST1–ST4 placements are allocated in advance, and from ST5 onwards, you’ll have the opportunity to express your preferences for where you’d like to train next. Every effort is made to match you to one of your top choices.

The training programme

After successful appointment through the RCOG national recruitment process, you’ll begin a seven-year run-through training programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at ST1. Entry at ST3 level is also possible when vacancies arise.

Throughout your training, you’ll follow the GMC-approved, modernised RCOG curriculum, gaining evidence of competence across a wide range of clinical and professional domains. You’ll also have opportunities to enhance your skills through Special Interest Professional Modules (SIPMs), allowing you to shape your training towards areas that inspire you most.

Every trainee is supported by a dedicated consultant Educational Supervisor, providing both pastoral care and professional guidance throughout your journey.

On completion, you’ll receive a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), your gateway to joining the GMC Specialist Register and practising as a consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

ST1–ST2: Foundation

Develop core obstetric and gynaecological skills while gaining confidence in clinical practice. The Step-Up Programme supports your transition to registrar level, with a dedicated study day and paired learning alongside senior trainees.

ST3–ST5: Development

Work as a registrar with increasing responsibility on labour ward and in gynaecology. Build expertise across both areas, begin Special Interest Training Modules (SITMs), and complete MRCOG Part 2 and 3 exams.

ST6–ST7: Consolidation

Refine advanced skills, gain expertise in areas of your choice through the SITM’s, supervise junior trainees, and manage complex cases with confidence knowing help is not far away. Final-year trainees can “act up” as consultants within three months of their CCT if the opportunity arises, preparing for independent practice and completion of CCT.

Training in Wales is more than completing a programme, its joining a vibrant community of doctors and educators committed to helping you grow. With supportive consultants, dedicated mentors, and a close-knit trainee network, Wales offers a truly personal O&G training experience.
