Outcome measures training helps improve how mental health services monitor and deliver care across Wales

Published: 22/05/2026

Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) has collaborated with NHS Performance and Improvement (NHS P&I) to launch the Outcomes Measures Fast-Track Training on Y Ty Dysgu, the national e-learning platform for NHS Wales. Suitable for health and social care staff who work in adult and older adult mental health services, the training has been designed to support them with using Outcome Measures in practice, helping improve how services monitor and deliver care.

The training, drawing on PROMs (Patient/Person Reported Outcome Measures), will explain the purpose and background of PROMS, and demonstrate how it can be routinely applied in practice to support service users.

Introducing PROMs to service users in mental health settings requires a thoughtful, sensitive approach. It's important to explain the purpose of these tools, address any concerns service users may have and ensure they understand how the process can benefit them. It will also highlight the wider importance of Outcome Measures, explaining its role in national reporting and how the data it provides can help services evaluate and improve their performance more effectively.

The training aims to:

  • build confidence in using ReQoL as part of routine clinical practice
  • support meaningful conversations with service users about quality of life and recovery
  • ensure ReQoL is used collaboratively, not as a 'tick box' exercise
  • improve the quality of outcome monitoring across services

This fast track training is designed to be flexible, practical and easy to complete alongside clinical work. It can be used individually or as part of team based learning.

The training is suitable for:

  • clinical and non-clinical staff in adult and older adult mental health services
  • staff involved in assessment, care planning, review or outcome monitoring
  • new starters and experiences staff needing a refresher on ReQoL
  • no prior knowledge of ReQoL is required.
