A new era for simulation in health and care has begun with the launch of the Professional Development Framework for multi-professional Simulation in Health and Care. Developed through collaboration across the four UK nations, Ireland and the Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH), this landmark framework represents a major step forward in strengthening and professionalising simulation practice.
The framework introduces a clear, shared structure to support simulation practitioners at every stage of their career. Covering key domains; education, technology, scholarship, leadership and transformative practice. The framework provides defined development pathways that help individuals build expertise, expand their skills and explore innovation. By aligning practice with recognised capabilities, it empowers simulation professionals to grow with confidence and clarity.
For organisations, the framework offers a robust foundation for workforce development, quality assurance and faculty progression. It supports the consistent and sustainable growth of simulation, ensuring high standards and long-term impact across health and care systems.
In Wales, the framework plays a pivotal role in raising the profile, consistency and impact of simulation. It directly supports the ambitions set out in HEIW’s Simulation Strategy, helping to deliver high-quality, safe and sustainable simulation practice. Crucially, it supports the use of simulation for education, research, innovation and quality enhancement, contributing to better patient care, safety, outcomes and experiences.
Sara Catrin-Cook, Associate Dean for Simulation and Clinical Skills said, “HEIW’s Simulation Team is proud to have contributed to this collaborative achievement and looks forward to embedding the framework into everyday practice across Wales. Being part of this co-developed work is an important step forward in professionalising simulation and the growing importance of simulation for health and care. It has been a pleasure to work alongside our simulation colleagues from the Four UK nations and Ireland as well as ASPiH and we look forward to collaborating further in the future."
