Digital Matrics modernises access to psychological therapies guidance

Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) has launched a new digital Matrics platform, transforming how psychological therapies guidance is accessed and updated across Wales.
The Matrics frameworks are the result of extensive collaborative working between service user and carer representatives of the National Mental Health Forum, the Psychological Therapies Management Committees (PTMCs) of the seven health boards in Wales, Welsh Government, the National Psychological Therapies Management Committee (NPTMC) and Public Health Wales. They seek to support the delivery of evidence‑based psychological interventions by bringing together NICE recommendations, research evidence, practice-based insight and lived experience.
Matrics Cymru (2017) focuses on adult mental health services, while Matrics Plant (published in 2020) provides developmentally appropriate guidance for children, young people and families. Matrics Learning Disability (2025) details guidance for the delivery of psychological interventions for children, young people, and adults with a Learning Disability in Wales. Together, the frameworks play a vital role in supporting the workforce to design and deliver consistent, effective, and high-quality services that meet population mental health needs.
Previously, the Matrics frameworks could be accessed via a series of PDF documents. While comprehensive and highly valued, these formats limited intuitive navigation of the guidance and could not be updated without new PDF addendums being published. To overcome these challenges HEIW transferred the content to an online webpage platform, offering a dynamic, user-friendly digital resource which is easy to access and update. The intended impact is increased use of these invaluable resources to inform service development, workforce planning and service delivery related to Psychological Interventions across Wales.
