What is a Healthcare Science Professional

Healthcare science professionals play a vital role in NHS Wales, working both behind the scenes and on the frontline. They help to prevent illness, diagnose conditions, treat patients, and support recovery, using science, technology, and clinical expertise. There are over 30 healthcare science professions, grouped into six specialist areas: 

Clinical Physiologies

Professionals in this area carry out tests to check how different parts of the body work. This helps find health problems and plan the right care for patients.

Laboratory Sciences and Genomics

Professionals in this area look at samples and genes to understand illnesses. Their work helps doctors make accurate diagnoses and choose the best treatments.

Pathology

Genomics

Physical Sciences

Professionals in this area use physics and engineering to make healthcare safer and better. They work with equipment and technology used for tests and treatments.

 

Clinical Computational Sciences

Professionals in this area use computers and data to improve patient care and support research. They help healthcare teams make better decisions.

Operating Department

 

Professionals in this area work with surgical teams to keep patients safe before, during, and after operations.

 

Radiography

Professionals in this area use advanced imaging and targeted radiation therapy to find illnesses and treat conditions like cancer.

 

Across all areas, there are opportunities to work in assistant and associate roles. With further training and experience, healthcare science professionals can progress into Clinical Scientist and Consultant Clinical Scientist roles, combining advanced practice, leadership, and innovation.
