Psychotherapist (Child Psychotherapist, Family and Systemic Psychotherapist)

For, information on careers in art, drama and music therapy, please see Allied Health Professionals (AHP) Careers - HEIW

Psychotherapists work with children, adults and families to assess and treat a range of emotional, social or mental health issues, such as behavioural issues, common challenges such as anxiety and depression. They also work with more severe or long-standing issues, such as psychosis or a personality disorder diagnosis.

Specialising in one or more psychotherapeutic approaches like psychodynamic psychotherapy, humanistic psychotherapy, cognitive therapy and behavioural therapy, psychotherapists explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, aiming to facilitate positive change and improve coping skills. This therapy will provide space to express feelings and gain a deeper insight into the issues they face. Therapy could be on a one-to-one basis or in group sessions.

To practice as a psychotherapist ongoing supervision is required to support self-reflection, to seek and respond to feedback, and develop professional knowledge and skills. They may also in turn supervise members of the team.
