High intensity therapists use evidence-based tools and techniques to support people to overcome complex problems related to a range of common mental health conditions such anxiety, depression obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
A large part of the role is assessing individuals’ suitability for evidence-based psychological interventions, formulating and implementing treatment and evaluating progress. High intensity therapists see individuals face-to-face or facilitate therapeutic groups. They also offer specialist advice to other professions on the delivery of specific therapeutic models and service provision.
High intensity therapists are required to undertake training in one or more of the high intensity therapies including cognitive behavioural therapy interpersonal psychotherapy for depression, counselling for depression and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.
A high intensity therapist will undertake clinical supervision, as well as providing clinical supervision to other members of the team.
