Counsellors work with people experiencing a wide range of psychological and emotional challenges. They help people talk about their feelings, think about their choices or their behaviour, to help them being about positive change and enhance their wellbeing. Counsellors can draw on a wide range of theoretical models and approaches (e.g. psychodynamic, humanist and cognitive-behavioural). They work from evidence showing that a good therapeutic relationship focused on client needs and understanding their world view leads to positive outcomes.
Counsellors can specialise in working with particular groups such as children and young people, families or older adults whilst others focus on specific issues such as such as addiction or bereavement.
