Clinical psychologists work with people of all ages on a wide range of psychological difficulties in mental and physical health that impacts on daily life. This includes anxiety and depression as well as other specialist areas such as eating disorders, neurological disorders and substance misuse.
Using a variety of techniques clinical psychologists make an assessment of the problem. Working in partnership they design and implement evidence-based interventions to manage conditions, improve quality of life and promote psychological wellbeing. Clinical psychologists are usually trained in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and at least one other psychotherapeutic approach.
Clinical Psychologists also use their scientist-practitioner training to help address whole system problems including at the family, community and institution level. They also routinely undertake service evaluation and research, contributing to the knowledge base of the field.
