Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) has launched a new interactive healthcare science experience at Xplore! Science Discovery Centre in Wrexham, showcasing the exciting and varied science professions that support NHS Wales.

Recently unveiled by Dr Sarah Bant, Associate Director of Workforce Transformation, HEIW, the exhibit places visitors inside a virtual hospital environment where they can explore real diagnostic and treatment scenarios guided by healthcare scientists. Pupils from The Rofft and Ysgol Pen Barras primary schools were among the first to experience it, taking part in hands‑on activities that bring healthcare science to life.

Inspiring Wales’ future workforce

As the national body responsible for developing the NHS Wales workforce, HEIW creates opportunities that help people of all ages explore future careers in health.

The exhibit forms part of HEIW’s wider work to spark interest in NHS careers and widen access to science pathways from an early age. Developed with Xplore! and healthcare science professionals, it provides a high‑quality, engaging introduction to the breadth of science roles within NHS Wales and links visitors to further careers information.

With more than 60,000 visitors each year, Xplore! offers a powerful platform to reach children, young people and families across north Wales, helping showcase the real opportunities available within the NHS.

Dr Sarah Bant, HEIW, said: “This exhibit offers visitors of all ages an opportunity to step into the shoes of NHS healthcare science professionals, meeting some of our fantastic scientists along the way. There’s no better way to highlight the range of healthcare science professions than through interactive play, and the science centre is the ideal setting for it.”

Now permanently installed at Xplore!, the experience will support schools and communities all year round.
