Name: Atindrya Ghosh
Studying: Biomedical Sciences
University: Cardiff University
Internship with: Simulation and Immersive Technologies Team
During summer 2025 HEIW welcomed students for an 8-week internship, offering each of them the chance to gain valuable insights into working within the NHS in Wales. Here, Atindrya shares their experience with the Simulation and Immersive Technologies team at HEIW.
During my degree, I developed a strong interest in how technology can transform healthcare education, and this internship with HEIW has given me the chance to explore this area on a national level. I joined the Simulation and Immersive Technologies Team at Health Education and Improvement Wales, where I am contributing to a project focused on embedding immersive technologies into healthcare education and training across Wales.
This opportunity has been incredibly rewarding as it has allowed me to combine skills I developed both during my degree and through previous experience. My background in biomedical sciences gave me strong research and analytical skills, which I’ve applied to reviewing evidence and supporting data analysis from stakeholder engagement activities.
From day one, HEIW has been extremely welcoming and supportive. The team has regularly checked in with me and provided informative workshops and mentoring sessions to help with my professional development. These sessions have taught me so much about the wide range of career paths available within the NHS, many of which I had never considered before.
The aim of the Immersive Technologies Project is to explore how tools like VR and AR can enhance learning in healthcare and make training more accessible, standardised, and engaging. My main responsibilities so far have included:
When I started, my first priority was to develop a thorough understanding of the project’s objectives and its alignment with HEIW’s broader Simulation Strategy. I learned about the scope of the project, the purpose of scoping exercises, and the methods used to capture insights from diverse stakeholders across Wales.
I also familiarised myself with the types of qualitative analysis we would conduct on stakeholder input, covering interviews, surveys, and how those findings would inform recommendations on implementing immersive technologies.
Additionally, I reviewed procedures for confidentiality and ethical handling of data, ensuring that all information collected from stakeholders was stored and processed securely.
The next phase of the project is to continue working on the most effective way to conduct analysis of stakeholder data, ensuring findings are presented clearly and accurately to inform recommendations. I will also look at how we can further benefit from AI tools to make the process more efficient, helping to save time while maintaining quality and precision in reporting.
The support and trust that my team have given me has been incredible. Their professionalism and encouragement to think on my own two feet has pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and surprise myself. The freedom I’ve been given reflects their confidence in me and has made my work a true reflection of the team’s collaborative and positive culture.
Outside of work, I love listening to music, playing football, running, and socialising with friends and family. Staying active and connecting with people helps me balance work and personal life.
