New Climate Smart Community for NHS Wales staff

The Climate Smart Community, developed by Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW), is a new networking platform on Gwella, the leadership portal for healthcare staff in NHS Wales.

The platform enables healthcare staff to share and engage in climate smart discussions and resources, as well as promote training opportunities with each other.

As part of this work, the Climate Smart Conversations podcast has recently been launched and the first episode is now live. The podcast highlights insights and inspiration on fostering a greener, more sustainable NHS in Wales.

As membership grows over the coming months, there are plans to develop the platform further, with a particular emphasis on addressing key areas of interest.

Sarah Thorne, Senior One Health Practitioner from Hywel Dda University Health Board, said:

“The new Climate Smart Community on Gwella, is a great resource for everyone who is involved in the delivery of sustainable, climate smart healthcare and those who want to learn more about it. It is easy to navigate and contains information in an accessible, bitesize format, including the important supportive legislation that grounds the work the NHS is doing in this area.”

Aligned with the actions on sustainability and climate smart education in the National Integrated Medium Term Plan (IMTP), the creation of the Climate Smart Community is a fantastic step forward.

All NHS Wales staff are encouraged to participate in the Climate Smart Community initiative by contributing in the following ways:
1. Sustainability in practice: Adopt eco-friendly habits both at work and at home. Reduce energy consumption, minimise waste, and choose sustainable alternatives whenever possible.

2. Share ideas: Have an innovative idea for reducing environmental impact? Share it with the Climate Smart Community members!

3. Stay informed: Keep up to date with the latest developments in sustainable healthcare and climate smart practices.

Get involved and work together to create a greener, more sustainable future for all organisations and the planet.
