Education, commissioning and quality

Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW), works to ensure a constant supply of registered healthcare professionals for NHS Wales.  This entails education and training for pre-registration healthcare professionals to enable them to enter the workforce.  In addition, we support the development of professionals with post-registration education to ensure they are supported throughout their NHS Wales career.

Education contracting and commissioning is made up of two elements:

Education contracting

HEIW contracts mainly with the higher education sector for the provision of both undergraduate and post graduate healthcare training.

Education commissioning

As the education commissioner for the NHS Wales non medical workforce, HEIW advises the Welsh Government each year of the number of healthcare training places required to meet current and future NHS Wales workforce need. This includes both undergraduate and post graduate professional education.
