Integrating smoking cessation

Dental teams should take every opportunity to encourage smoking cessation and provide information on cessation support services. Brief intervention is effective in helping smokers stop smoking.

To assist dental teams to integrate smoking cessation into routine dental practice, a funded audit has been designed by the dental section, Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) with Public Health Wales.

Dental practitioners can register their interest by contacting HEIW dental QI. By completing the audit, NHS dental practitioners can claim funding as well as verifiable continuous professional development (CPD). Community dental services, private only dentists, foundation dentists and dental care professionals can also complete the audit to claim verifiable CPD only.
