Psychological support

Psychological support can be beneficial to the trainee from time to time during training for a variety of reasons. This can include a significant life event, experiencing burnout, stress and/or anxiety, help to make sense of a significant event or difficult situation at work for example. Evidence shows that psychological therapy can work well for a range of issues including emotional, mental and behavioural.

The Professional Support Unit (PSU) in Wales uses Hammet Street Consultants (HSC) Ltd - HSC therapists have extensive experience of working with junior doctors and dentists in training, feedback on their support and the service is very positive.

Following a meeting with the PSU, a referral can be made and contact with an HSC therapist organised within 48 hours. The support can include Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) and psychotherapy; six funded sessions are available.
