National Retention Programme update

Published: 03/12/2024

The National Retention Programme has continued to progress at pace since its launch in April 2024, with many developments being realised.

The national retention community of practice has received high levels of engagement and participation. It has been hugely beneficial in supporting collaboration, learning and innovation to improve staff retention across the system in Wales. In September 2024 the Community of Practice had the opportunity to undertake the Improvement in Practice award delivered by the Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) Quality Improvement Skills Training (QIST) team to ensure all leads are equipped with the Quality Improvement (QI) knowledge, skill and expertise needed to support colleagues to undertake retention quality improvement.

The belong, thrive, stay digital National Retention Hub continues to grow to ensure key retention resources, tools, data and case studies are available and refreshed to assist staff across NHS Wales to positively impact retention within their individual working environments. We have already seen an increase in targeted retention quality improvement projects and interventions across Wales, with over 45 projects being progressed to increase staff retention and create working environments where colleagues belong, thrive and stay.

During the last few months, the programme has placed a significant focus upon assisting organisations to both identify their retention baseline position and measure the impact of improvement interventions delivered. To achieve this a variety of new tools and resources have been developed. These include the evaluation, refresh and streamlining of the multi-professional self-assessment tool with associated reporting dashboard, and the development of a retention key metric dashboard, all of which are being launched within the National Retention Hub during December 2024.

If you would like further information or would like to get involved in improving retention together please reach out to Zoe Gibson, National Retention Lead or your local retention lead.
