COVID-19 Critical Care learning

In response to Dr Andrew Goodall’s call for us to upskill non critical care staff to support critical care specialists we have proactively engaged with the service and Universities  in Wales to devise a plan of action.   Following a week of useful discussions and meetings with the All Wales Clinical Care leads, Universities and HEIW colleagues we are pleased to confirm that we are now in a position to offer a 3 day course and a 1 day course which we have entitled:

  • Non-Critical Care Staff working in Critical Care (Day 1, 2, 3 of the programme required. This training will improve knowledge, skills and confidence to enable non-critical care staff to support critical care practitioners.
  • Non-Critical Care Staff working outside of Critical Care to support patients with Covid 19  (Day 3 of the programme required only).  This training will improve knowledge, skills and confidence to enable non-critical care staff to support patients admitted with Covid 19 that do not require ICU care.

Universities across Wales have worked exceptionally hard and extremely quickly to develop and make this available.  This is an excellent example of higher education partners responding with urgency and professionalism in response to what is a critical situation.

The target audience is predominantly ODP’s, Anaesthetic Assistants and Recovery Nurses who have experience of patient airways and whose primary work has diminished recently following the cancellation of elective surgery across NHS Wales.  Taking staff out of the hospitals now is not ideal but this is a necessity to build resilience in the system if the pandemic escalates.

This training can also be for other staff that would benefit or who may, over the coming months, be asked to support critical care specialists.
