Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (DNA CPR) (Section 5) consultation

Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) has been supporting the NHS Wales Health Collaborative in the work on the Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (DNA CPR) (Section 5) consultation.

The All Wales DNACPR Policy for Adults was updated in 2020, to enable a wider range of Health Care Professionals (HCPs) to lead and facilitate a Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)/DNA CPR conversation and decision.

CPR and DNA CPR discussions are an important part of advance and future care planning, supporting patients to consider their views, wishes and preferences for future care, once they are better informed about what CPR is and how (un)successful it can be in varying situations.

HCPs across Wales have identified and requested a need for more clarity and guidance around preparation and training. Without further clarity and guidance, there is a risk that some HCPs may be reluctant to facilitate CPR/ DNA CPR conversations and decisions, thereby affecting wider advance and future care planning and patient choice.

HEIW has been working in partnership with NHS organisations and other stakeholders across Wales to develop an All Wales Competency Framework for the Completion of the All Wales DNACPR Form (Section 5) by Registered Health Care Professionals. This competency framework has been produced for Health Boards and other health care partner organisations to use in order to support identified registered HCPs to receive appropriate training and preparation.

It is important to seek the opinions and feedback from a wider perspective of the relevant HCP groups to shape and inform this competency framework. Therefore, we would like to invite you to take part in this consultation.
