Additional information

The Swansea Bay General Practice (GP) training scheme covers the geographical areas of Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot. We are one of the largest training schemes in Wales and maintain a friendly and supportive learning environment. Our trainees benefit from both the diverse city life and the wonderful Gower Peninsular on their doorstep.

The site-locations listed above for each post may vary due to organisational changes within the department or host practice. Trainees may be expected to travel to a different location during their placement e.g. to a branch surgery.

Fixed rotations are not available. However, GP Programme Directors take into consideration each trainee’s prior hospital-based experience and endeavour to offer posts that complement this. We want to ensure our GP trainees have a broad base of hospital experience.  This cannot be guaranteed and depends on the hospital rotations available for each recruitment round. Trainees are not able to choose their GP training practice as allocation depends on availability at the time rotations are set.

Trainees are offered rotations in training practices and hospitals within Swansea Bay. The main hospital sites are Singleton, Morriston, Cefn Coed and Neath Port Talbot Hospital.

Your training will include two six-month hospital posts. The remainder of your time will be based in primary care.

All trainees are allocated a GP Educational Supervisor for every training year. Those trainees in hospital posts will also be allocated a Clinical Supervisor for further support whilst working in secondary care.

Hospital based trainees benefit from departmental teaching and are welcome to join half day release sessions if available. All our trainees are invited to curriculum days which are run quarterly and are based on the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) curriculum.
