To deliver A Healthier Wales we need to expand the number of practices and settings able to provide a quality training environment for the future workforce. Through the academy infrastructure, we aim to support delivery of national programmes delivered through HEIW profession specific programmes and further and higher education institutions. Where opportunities are identified with no existing offer, we will be working with key stakeholders to expand training and clinical placements opportunities in primary and community care. We recognise that physical capacity to host learners and availability of skilled educators are challenges to achieving this aim and are working to meet them with innovative solutions.
By providing clinical placements, we want to inspire the future workforce to begin a rewarding career in primary and community care.

Within the Foundation Programme, General Practice placements are offered either as a “Longitudinal” placement during the F1/first year, in which one trainee attends for one day a week across a 12 month period, or as a standard placement in F2/second year, in which three trainees will rotate into the placement every 4 months across the year. In both cases, a named GP will provide clinical supervision during the placement as well as educational supervision for the year. Any questions around the Foundation Programme can be directed to the Foundation School on HEIW.FoundationSchool@wales.nhs.uk.
Placements are generally arranged between September and December prior to the August start dates. You can express your interest in hosting either F1 or F2 placements via HEIW.GPTraining@wales.nhs.uk.
